Fringe regular Ed Night pulled off a near seamless show this first Sunday afternoon of August. Given the time of the week, the audience I sat amongst wasn’t particularly rowdy, which only gives more credit to the pretty much unceasing laughs he was able to draw from the room throughout his hour-long set.

Much of the run time is spent on his living situation, partner, and local neighbourhood, all through-lines which provide an impressively solid backbone to the set. Seriously – even a meandering tale of popping into the local shop is made effortlessly entertaining.

Some of the biggest laughs of the afternoon come from some sub-30-second recordings of his grandad, a recurring character in Night’s anecdotes, which he uses sparingly for maximum effect. These also do the job of breaking up Night’s monologues, adding texture to the show’s soundscape.

He’s a master at transitions, smoothly hopping from one anecdote to another while dipping into entertainingly farcical digressions. This chaotic style landed well with the audience, and Night’s charming, confident and endearingly self-aware delivery kept everyone engaged through bizarre diversion.

Though he makes plenty of jokes at his own (and his grandad’s) expense, this isn’t a set reliant on self-deprecation – Night’s a skilled comic who’s come to Edinburgh prepared with a slick hour of tightly-written patter, and he knows it. He manages to use the small space of Hive’s dungeon-like venue effectively, moving up and down the aisle to pull focus from the audience front to back.

Speaking of the audience, I especially want to credit Night’s poise when some audience members left loudly halfway through his set. As it was Hive, they may have been trying to leave quietly and the intense squeaking of the booze-sticky floors made things unintentionally awkward. Whether they meant to cause a scene or not, Night breezed on with his monologue, only the barest pause noticeable before the room settled again.

It’s a testament to the show’s slick writing that it left me wishing for a bit more thematic depth — Your Old Mucker is sharp and well-crafted, but could afford to dig a little deeper. A mish-mash of detail-rich anecdotes, masterful puns, and even a touch of tentacle porn are all expertly woven into a polished, impressively accomplished hour of comedy.
