Returning to the Fringe after three sell-out runs, Live at the Apollo and HIGNFY regular Petts is back with Big Naturals — a slick, playful hour that explores boobs, football, role models, and the Lad Culture that shaped her.
She strolls onstage and sizes up the crowd: “I like to know what sort of audience I’ve got… who’s been dragged here by their kids or a bicurious girlfriend.” It’s a strong start, and from there, you’re in a safe pair of hands. Petts shares jokes like a series of cheeky winks, and listening to a selection of her well-chosen anecdotes feels like you’ve bumped into a friend at your local and stayed for an extra round.
Petts takes us through her upbringing with sharp storytelling and warmth — from fronting a Christian rock band to navigating her sexuality in the thick of 00s Lad Culture. Back then, lads were lads, nothing like the article-reading tote-bag wielding ‘little rat boys’ of today. But nonetheless, it is now time to inspect the effect this culture has had on her own identity. For example, why has she had so many tiny ‘baby gay’ girlfriends? What effect does seeing Kasabian 14 times in a row have on the young mind? And when, if ever, is it appropriate to properly ‘kick off’?
The material is autobiographical but never indulgent, blending wry observation with genuine heart. There’s laughter throughout, and Petts often corpses at her own stories. She pokes at gender roles, identity, and her own misadventures, all leading to a quietly powerful finale.
At its heart, this is a show about role models, masculinity, and the big feelings that lad culture didn’t make space for. Smart, silly, and full of soul, Big Naturals is a gorgeously hilarious hour of storytelling.
