Chris Cook: FAKE ****

Let it be known that Chris Cook could be the only magic show we review this fringe. Not usually a magic fan, Chris puts us at ease by getting all the classic cheap tricks out of the way first, even revealing a few magic secrets in the process. He’s a talent when it comes to slight of hand, and looks down upon a poorly earned applause if he feels it’s beneath him. And that’s fine by me- because Cook has so much more to offer than parlour tricks.

Having seen Cook’s shows in the past, he is an experienced performer who weaves comic timing, misdirection and genuinely fascinating themes through his shows. The magic almost feels secondary to the central theme he’s exploring, and part magician, part comedian, part historian-come-motivational speaker, ‘Fake’ is another well-structured show worth your time.

“Everything I say whilst standing on this stage is true” What is a Fake? Aren’t we all Faking it? Cook retells fascinating stories about fakes through history, specifically in the world of very expensive art. Between tales of some of the best fakes in history (Are these stories fake? I don’t care to check, because they were so enjoyable) he wows participating audience members with genuinely impressive mind-reading and objects that seem to leap through mid air. He’s a natural at putting the crowd at ease, and the front row are nothing if not enthusiastic to join in. He was gifted a retired soldier to validate a very real and definitely legal fire arm, leading to a wonderfully satisfying pay-off.

Chris Cook is a charismatic and seasoned performer with a wonderful stage presence. It’s fantastic value for money, (Especially because he commits to his post at Voodoo rooms as part of the Free Fringe) and the grand finale had even me, a magical sceptic, suspending belief if only for a moment.
